Benefits of Lawn Dethatching

There are many benefits to dethatching your lawn including:

  • Firstly, dethatching helps to improve the overall health of your grass. It removes the matted layer of thatch that accumulates on top of your lawn from the dead grass, leaves, and other debris that builds up over time. This allows for better airflow and water penetration, which encourages your grass to thrive.

  • Secondly, it can also help to improve the appearance of your lawn. By removing the thatch, you’ll get rid of any unsightly patches, and the grass will look greener and thicker. So, if you want to make your lawn look its best, dethatching is a great option.

  • Thirdly, dethatching also helps to strengthen the roots of your grass. The process of dethatching loosens the soil, making it easier for the roots to take hold and grow deeper. This is especially important during the summer months when your lawn is most prone to drought stress.

  • Finally, lawn dethatching in Omaha can help to reduce the amount of weeds and pests that can invade your lawn. The thatch acts as an ideal breeding ground for weeds and pests, so by removing it you can help to reduce their presence and keep your lawn looking its best.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Lawn Dethatching FAQ’s

HOW MUCH DOES LAWN DETHATCHING COST?

Our dethatching price starts at $150, but of course, pricing is based on the estimated amount of time that it will take our team to complete your job. Things that will affect the estimated amount of time include property size, property layout, current landscaping condition, the complexity of the landscaping, and your requested scope of work. WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO HAVE MY LAWN DETHATCHED?

Similarly to core aeration and overseeding, dethatching is performed mid-Spring and mid-Fall. This time is ideal for dethatching as it allows the grass to recover quickly and allows new grass to fill in under the best conditions.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY LAWN DETHATCHED?

You should check your lawns thatch layer at least twice a year. Detaching services should be performed when the thatch is greater than 1/4 inch thick. We recommend at least once every other season, in conjunction with your lawn aeration and overseeding program. The average home typically requires this service once every other year.

DO YOU RAKE UP THE DEAD GRASS AFTERWARD?

Yes, while a technician is navigating the power rake, we have other crew members behind the machine cleaning up and hauling away any debris.

WHY DOES MY LAWN LOOK BARE AFTER DETHATCHING?

The service itself removes any dead grass from the lawn, which can result in more visible dirt; thus your lawn appearing barer. Seeing the exposed dirt proves that the dead thatch underneath was removed.  Now the soil will be ready to soak up the sun, rain, fertilizer and new seed it needs to keep it healthy and flourishing.

WHAT SERVICES ARE TYPICALLY IN CONJUNCTION WITH DETHATCHING?

Our recommended routine includes dethatching, core aeration and then a general overseed of the lawn.

DOES IT MATTER IF I DETHATCH OR DO CORE AERATION FIRST?

The order of these services won’t make a difference if appropriately performed using commercial equipment.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CORE AERATION AND DETHATCHING?

Dethatching is the process of removing the dead layer of grass at the soil’s surface. Core aeration is the process of pulling up plugs of compacted soil to allow for optimal saturation of light, water, and nutrients.

SHOULD I MOW BEFORE DETHATCHING?

The grass should be less than 4 inches tall when performing this service. You should mow before detaching if your lawn is greater than 4 inches in length.
